A musical pioneer almost lost to the mists of time, his talent changed the world. John William “Blind” Boone was born in 1864 in a Union Army camp near Miami, Missouri. His mother was an escaped enslaved person, and his father was a bugler in the Union Army. At six months old, his eyes were removed in a surgery to save his life. The loss of his sight was just the first of many challenges he would overcome. Blind Boone struggled against and overcame racism as one of the first African American concert performers. This musical historical fantasy tells of his roots in a Union Army camp at the end of the Civil War and how a former Confederate General and town elder of Warrensburg helped arrange for Boone to be educated at a school for the blind. With the help of his wife and his loyal and savvy African American business manager, John Lange, Jr., Boone pursued an elite concert pianist performing career from 1880 until 1927 — during a time of segregation, discrimination, and racism, when there were very few African Americans performing in concert halls. Most facts told in this story are true to the historical record.
