It's important for a cutting engineer to know what It's important for a cutting engineer to know what they're looking at when they get a set of masters in, whether for tape or digital. In this photo is an example with CD times on the left, and track times for tape / vinyl on the right. This gives us the information we need for trackbands, runtime and settings. Tape cuts can be some of the most rewarding listening experiences, so we make sure it gets cut right. The preview channel feeds information to the lathe before the audio gets cut, so the grooves can be correctly spaced out based on dynamics and other audio content. When we're cutting from tape, a specialized path is required for the preview channel to get information to the lathe correctly.
